When did 2011 get here!?

•January 20, 2011 • Leave a Comment

I think it’s time to make my once-a-year post.

I would have sworn that it was just August and I was still enjoying warm sunny skies and a few rounds of golf. How did 2011 sneak up on me so quickly!? Oh yeah, I took part in the NAHB Residential Construction Management Competition. This project took up hours and hours of my time. My social life consisted of going to Church and seeing friends who only faintly remembered me. Every other waking minute (and sometimes not-so-awake-minutes) seemed to be spent working on the project. To sum it all up, my roommate Trent said it best last night: “I finally have my best friend back!” In the end, and despite a finish that I was hoping would be better, I have to admit, the project was fun and very educating.

So, after a trip to Orlando, Florida, to finish up the competition and visit the sites, here I am, not wanting to do my Physics homework that is due this evening. Oh 2011, I hope you do not leave as fast as 2010 did. Or maybe you could just prolong the best moments!

For a look at what my team and I spent the last quarter of 2010 working on, click on this link http://db.tt/XiCXOWL. Beware, it is a big file and will take a little while to show.

Here's the inside of my knee

Happy Birthday Ryan!

Who in their right mind would even consider waking up at 4 in the morning? Oh yeah, that’s me (although I’m not sure I’m ever in my right mind, I think I’m left brained). It’s 6:45 a.m. and I’ve been going 2 hours strong on a 6-page paper that is due in 9 hours. I’m halfway done. I now have some sausage cooking on the stove and am getting myself ready to finish making a grand breakfast.

In other news, it’s my best friend/cousin/roommate’s 23rd birthday today. Congratulations Ryan on making it one more year!!! I still remember almost 20 years ago having sleepovers at your place, and I am still jealous of your Ninja Turtles sleeping bag. Anyways, hope it’s the greatest birthday you’ve ever had!

Went to the doctor today for a check up on my knee. As usual, I sat in the waiting room for 45 minutes. My visit with the doctor lasted all of five minutes. He took a look at my knee, asked me how it felt, then said that I can start working out on it and just let pain be my guide. This is good news. I could be playing basketball again real soon!

My Knee

I had my first “real” surgery this last Friday (apparently, having your wisdom teeth extracted does not count, even when they use anesthesia). I had seen the doctor back in October and had an MRI in November, but he could not diagnose why I was having problems with my knee. Finally, a few weeks ago, I went back to visit the doctor. He persuaded me to have “exploratory surgery.” I’ve never really had the desire to go under the knife, so I was hesitant. I’m glad I did. They found that I had torn my lateral meniscus (a relatively rare injury).

This surgery is not as bad as many of the other possible surgeries. There is a kid in my ward who’s been on crutches since October. I started walking right after the surgery. Today, I took off the wrap. I have three small incisions around my kneecap. Pretty awesome what can be done now. I also have pictures of the inside of my knee. Those will be posted within the next little while.

Basically, I’m happy to be on the road to recovery to a fully functional knee. And, my first taste of “real” surgery wasn’t too bad either. Plus, everyone likes the cane that I use.
